Interesting Facts About Angelina Jolie That You Didn’t Know

Angelina Jolie is an American actress and Academy Award winner. Some of her famous movies include “Girl, Interrupted,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” “Changeling,” and “Maleficent.” Jolie is married to Brad Pitt and is a mother of six children – a daughter and twins with Pitt and three children adopted internationally. Jolie is also known for her humanitarian work around the world and devotes one third of her earnings to charity.

Angelina Jolie Voight was born on June 4, 1975 and raised in Los Angeles, California. She is the only daughter of actor Jon Voight and model Marcheline Bertrand and the sister of actor James Haven. Surrounded by the acting world, Jolie began to pursue the craft at the age of 11, studying with famed acting guru Lee Strasberg.

Jolie began acting in film and television in small roles in the mid-1990s. Her first notable film role was 1995’s “Hackers.” That’s when Jolie met the first of her three husbands, Jonny Lee Miller. Jolie’s big break came in 1998 with the release of the HBO movie “Gia.” The role of model/heroin addict Gia Carangi won Jolie a Golden Globe award. By 1999, Jolie’s marriage to Miller was on the rocks and she began a relationship with her “Pushing Tin” co-star Billy Bob Thornton. That same year, Jolie starred in her signature role of Lisa in “Girl, Interrupted.” That role won her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2000.

Like many Oscar winners, Jolie’s career hit a slump featuring a string of lackluster movies and performances. Her marriage in 2000 to Thornton did not help matters, as the relationship consisted of numerous bizarre events and uncomfortable interviews. Toward the end of her marriage in 2003, Jolie began doing more humanitarian work and exhibiting less odd behavior. Her divorce in 2003 was preceded by the adoption of a son, Maddox, from Cambodia the year before.

In 2005, Jolie’s career and private life seemed to be veering toward a more even keel. She starred in “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”, adopted a new daughter, Zahara, from Ethiopia, and started a relationship with Brad Pitt. The then-married Pitt would go on to be her partner and, in 2014, her husband. At the time, their relationship was quite controversial.

Pitt and Jolie adopted another child, Pax, in 2006. In 2007, Jolie won critical acclaim for her portrayal of Mariane Pearl in “A Mighty Heart” and earned a Golden Globe nomination for the performance. The 2008 Clint Eastwood film, “Changeling,” brought Jolie her second Oscar nomination. In the years since, Jolie has been the voice of Tigress for the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise, given birth to a daughter (Shiloh) and a set of twins (Knox and Vivienne), and directed two films, 2011’s “In the Land of Blood and Honey” and 2014’s “Unbroken.”

In addition to her filmography, Jolie is very active in humanitarian work, especially conservation, women’s rights and education. She has received a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and Honorary Dame Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George. Jolie is one of the most influential movie stars of this generation.
